Holy hiatus, Batman! And a newly modified purpose!

Wow...and hello!

So it has been quite a long time since I've posted something in this blog...

Like, a really long time.

I almost didn't recognize Blogger when I logged in.  New buttons, fancy charts and dials, but sadly [or thankfully] no 'New Blogger' smell.  That's OK.

Apparently, according to Blogger, I have not posted something since November 2011, although I did make a whole-hearted [read: half-assed] effort to post something in February 2012...so...an A for [half-assed] effort!

And just to share in case there are other 'number lovers' out there, the last day I tried to post was 2/17, and today is 7/2...should I wait until 7/12 to post?!?  Hahah....OK I'm the only one who is understanding this and laughing, so on to better, sweeter things...

Sorry.

At this point you may be asking yourself several things, including how you got here and why you are still reading this.  Or maybe it's more genuine and basic like "Who the hell are you?" or "What are Sweets N Treats?" or maybe even "Seen any good movies, lately?" [in which case I have not...unless you count Dances with Wolves...but that is not terribly recent...but it is terribly good].

Since it has been forever and a day since I've blogged, I'd love to do a little recap of who we are, what we do, and what we love!  But the truth is I am way too lazy right now, so keep your eyes peeled for that recap later.  Hey, at least I'm honest, right?  Right?!

Since November 2011 and even February 2012, we have seen an explosion in business!!  OK, not an explosion, because that would be messy and as lazy as I am about typing a business recap for a blog that I am trying to revive, I'm even lazier about cleaning up after explosions.

Our customers have been incredible and plentiful, and the best thing for business has been YOU!  Maybe not you per-say, but someone you know, I bet.  And if not you, then it should be you.  Soon.  Seriously...we have good stuff.

Many of you know that we were side-railed in March [there IS a blog posting about this!] because of my health issues--wicked, unrelenting migraines.  I'd love to say that since March, and November, and February, that is has gotten better.  I'd love to say that I've got my migraines under control and have ways to deal with the bad days.  I wish I could say that I can make dates and plans without having to worry about canceling last minute!

Sadly, I cannot say any of that.   Saturday July 7th will mark 16 months that I have had a migraine.  And please read that as MIGRAINE, the debilitating neurological disorder that affects more than 36 million Americans that is often non-responsive to the most intense medications and treatments, not HEADACHE, the annoying head pain you get after a night of too much drinking [dude, I can't even drink and get a hangover because alcohol is a migraine trigger...*sigh*].

In the meantime since March I've been hospitalized twice, been in individual and group therapy, had over 50 injections into my head/neck, been on anti-depressants and told it was stress and in my head, "diagnosed" with and treated for Fibromyalgia, have been prescribed Ketamine [maybe you know it as 'Special K'...or animal tranquilizer...yeah!] and other 'Oh THIS will surely knock you out' drugs, have tried almost every made-for-migraine preventative out there, and here I sit typing this with a level-7 migraine and all over body pain.

Please know I'm not sharing this information for sympathy.  Trust me that in 16 months I have learned a thing or two about where to allocate my attention/energy, and it is not on people who feel pity for me or who think I am over-reacting.  I share this because I know there are others who live the same life I do, struggling with daily pain that has been so disabling, you are a mere shadow of your former self.

That's where sweet treats come in!! ... ...what?!

You might be thinking "Well, Sara, if you are in so much pain all the time, so much that you can't even work, drive, watch your kids, [insert any other thing here], how in the hell are you making cookies?  And cakes?  And cupcakes??".  And I would say "That is a very good, and valid, question" and then I'd proceed to tell you...

Baking is my therapy.  I only need an hour or two at a time to make all the wonderful things I do.  Maybe it will take me one day.  Maybe it will take me three.  But for those brief moments when I'm making delicious buttercream, topping brownies with walnuts, or adding the finishing details to decorated cookies, I am not thinking about my pain.

For some small time I am not thinking about the all-consuming-never-ending-doesn't-care-it's-your-birthday-or-whether-you-have-health-insurance pain.  I live for those moments.  And it is in those moments where I am happy.  If there is anything I have learned in my life as someone who deals with chronic pain, I know it is to have as many of those moments in my life as I can.  So far, so good.

Don't get me wrong.  There are still times when, after a big order, I'm in bed for days.  Work hard, play hard, I guess.

Now I find myself balancing the demand of my business with the demand of my body.  This time last year, I would not have been able to do it, either because I was not able or because I didn't want to.  July 2012 brings about a new outlook on life, one of acceptance, education, and involvement!

At least until I get lazy...which is kind of often, if my blog is any indicator...but not too often if my baking is any indicator.

So be on the lookout [maybe] for new posts [hopefully], new information/support about Migraines and Fibromyalgia [definitely], and lots of new photos and orders!

Wow...that was long.  Thanks for hanging in there for all of that...or not.  I'm cool with you just enjoying the pictures.  At least you stopped by!

One love,
Sara of Sara's Sweets N Treats :)

P.S. What type of patient advocate would I be if I didn't deliver on my promise of information on my chronic disorders?!  Here you go--and Happy July!

P.P.S. What type of business owner would I be if I didn't share our new Facebook page with you!!  Check it out and be our friend!

Because everyone needs a good dessert <3

Cookies #3 & 4: Best Chocolate Brownie EVER [and with walnuts]

This is the third [and fourth--going for a twofer here] post in a series of blogs that centers around our holiday cookie selection.  We pride ourselves on having not only great tasting cookies, but unique tastes for everyone's palate.  Check out our holiday blog to see a list of the wonderful cookies you can choose from this season.

Up until I was about 20, I made brownies from scratch.  In fact, I had not really ever seen a box mix for brownies, and surely had never used one.  Maybe it's the fact that my mom was a big baker and we always made things from scratch because that's how you do it in lower middle-class Egypt.  It seemed like no big deal.  Until I met friends who told me otherwise.  They showed me the wonder of the 'boxed brownie'; in ten minutes and with ingredients I always had*, I could make a batch of decent brownies.  And so I did for awhile; in all honesty I was not that impressed with the scratch recipe I used in the past [sorry, Hershey].

*What most people don't know is I also happen to have the ingredients for making brownies from scratch lying around.  That's what happens when you become an obsessive baker.

Cookie #2-Rugelah

This is the second post in a series of blogs that centers around our holiday cookie selection.  We pride ourselves on having not only great tasting cookies, but unique tastes for everyone's palate.  Check out our holiday blog to see a list of the wonderful cookies you can choose from this season.

Today's cookie, if we want to call it that, is Rugelach.  It can be spelled a variety of ways, and I will probably spell it at least two different ways in this blog.  Not on purpose...folks who know me know I'm a horrible speller.  But I make a mean Rugelach :)

Meet our Cookies

Fry: Hey, you know what always cheers you up, baking me a nice tray of sugar cookies!
Mildred: How about these cookies, sugar? [She rips her shirt off revealing her bra.]

A little tribute to my Futurama fans out there.

C is for Cookie
Welcome to the 'Meet our Cookies' blog, a sort of speed dating event that gives you a little bit of information about our holiday cookies.  And please know that 'holiday cookies' is a misnomer; you can order these fine cookies any time of the year.  What's a good cookie if you can only have it during December.  Psh.  Another caveat is that not all of the cookies are 'cookies'.  Yes I know, I'm complicating things.  Trust me with this: there is something for everyone and everything is delicious.

Cookie #1: Spiced Chocolate Wafer Cookie

This is the first post in a series of blogs that centers around our holiday cookie selection.  We pride ourselves on having not only great tasting cookies, but unique tastes for everyone's palate.  Check out our holiday blog to see a list of the wonderful cookies you can choose from this season.

I'm beginning with our Spiced Chocolate Wafer Cookie only because I just finished the dough and it is chilling in the fridge right now.  It's also not your ordinary cookie.

WARNING: This cookie is not for everyone!  It is not for the faint of heart as you will soon see.  It combines a marvelous combination of flavors that taste buds just love; it is one spicy cookie.
